About the Me-Dam-Me-Phi Festival of Assam


Me-Dam-Me-Phi festival is one of the most popular festival of Assam which is celebrated on 31st January on every year by the Ahom peoples of Assam. It is also a very old festival of Assam which is celebrated by the Ahom peoples of Assam from many years ago.
There is also a interesting thing which we can know from the name of this festival of Assam. The first tow letter "Me" means about offer or offering. The next three letters "Phi" means the GOD or the creator of the whole world. So the actual meaning of this Me-Dam-Me-Phi Festival is to offer something to GOD.
This festival is mainly focused on the faith. According to the peoples of Ahom peoples Lengdon is the GOD of Heaven who sent Khunlai and Khunlung who are the grandson of him to the Earth. When they came to the Earth the God of knowledge "Gasingpha" advised them to worship the Me-Dam-Me-Phi, Umpha, Rikhan and Phuralong. From that day this festival is celebrated in different months.

In the Me-Dam-Me-Phi festival of Assam there are three GOD get worshiped, they are Grihadam, Me Dam Me Phi and Dam Changphi. According to the Ahom peoples the Dam Changphi GOD is the fourteenth generation of a family and the Grihadam GOD is the fourth generation of a family. In the Me-Dam Me Phi festival the Ahom peoples offer Dam Chaufi and Chaufi to the Me-Dam Me Phi GOD because Me-Dam Me Phi is the GOD of Heaven. The Ahom people think that when a man dead then he become the Dam and afetr some days he becomes Phi which means the GOD. So the Ahom peoples worship their dead family members at the back side of their kitchen which is also known as Barghar and accoring to Assam people they told it as Damkhuta. They offer them rice, mah-prasad, homemade wine, fish and also meat. So this Me-Dam-Me-Phi festival of Assam is one of the most religious festival of Assam.
