About the Mahabhairav Temple of Assam
The famous ancient temple of Mahabhairab situated at the top of a hillock on the northern side of Tezpur town is a gigantic landmark and provides a magnetic prestige and beauty to this beautiful town. It is believed that the temple have been established by king Bana in the pre-historical times.
From the establishment the main Shiva temple was originally built of stone but after heavily damaged by the catastrophic earthquake of 1897 the new one was reconstructed and built with concrete. Kings of Ahom rule donated huge area of Devottar land to the Temple and priests and Paiks were appointed to look after the temple. The complete responsibility of Temple management was in the hands of a Borthakur.
The religious history of this temple, which is visited by many devotees from all over India, can be shown back to the age of the Puranas. Banasura, the demon king first introduced the linga worship, who had his capital at Tezpur . The most interesting thing to observe that perhaps the largest stone-phallus (Shiva Linga) in the entire world inside the temple of Mahabhairab which is said to have been established by Banasura.
Recently the temple has been readorned and interiors renovated by M.G.V.K. Bhanu, IAS, and the Deputy Commissioner, Sonitpur, Basanta K. Goswami with other large-hearted personalities and generous institutions such as Sonabheel Tea Limited etc. The Temple management now spread their bold steps towards the redesign of temple like the main gate to connect the boundary walls, a huge Kalyan Mandapam to hold social functions such as marriages, etc., few guest rooms for visiting devotees and tourists from a long away places, shopping accomodation to be let out for recurring revenue with beautifull gardens and music fountains to give the place an awesome look. Tourists can get their best accomodation in this holy place. Shivaratri is the famous festival celebrated in the temple with big festivity when people gathers here from all over the country.

Salonibari in Tezpur is the nearest airport to reach the place. Moreover Indian Airlines with other private airlines flys from Kolkata and Guwahati on particular days of the week.
Tezpur is well connected by rail from nearby areas and the railway station is placed a few miles away in the town.
Well Bus fascilities connect Tezpur from many places in the state and surrounding region.
