Tourist places in Nagaon District of Assam

Nagaon District is situated at a distance of 123 kms by road from Guwahati. Nagaon city consists of the Golaghat District, Jorhat, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia District with the north Assam districts namely Sonitpur and North Lakhimpur. The famous torist attraction Kaziranga National Park, houses one-horned rhinoceros,spreads from north-eastern parts of Nagaon District up to Golaghat.

Nagaon District is situated between 25 degree 45 min. to 26 degree 45 min. in north Latitudes. This District is located at an average altitude of 60.6 metres above the sea level.

From the tome pf passed into British rules in 1826 and was declared as a district in 1833. After that in 1839 headquarters of the district were founded in Nagaon . Initially huge portion of the Naga Hills, the Mikir Hills and North Cachar Hills were the part of Nagaon District. Gradually, they were ommit to form separate tribal district.

Tourism in Nagaon District:

Bordowa:

The birth place of Sankaradeva, was the founder of Vaishnavism in Assam this place is located at a distance of 18 km north-west from Nagaon city. There are two famous Satras namely Narowa Satra and Salaguri Satra. A mini Museum is also located in Narowa Satra.

Pokhi Tirtha:

With the other name Samaguri Bill this beautifull place is located at a distance of 16 km towards east from Nagaon district. Many migratory birds comes to this place from different parts of the world come which is the most interesting scenic for the tourists.

Lowkhowa Avayaranya:

This famous wild life sanctuary is located at Lowkhowa. Covering an area of 70 sq km it is situated located at a distance of 25 km from Nagaon district to north. The main attraction of this sanctury is the Great Indian one-horned Rhinoceros. Many other species of animals include the tiger, leopard, Asiatic buffalo, wild boar, civet cat, leopard cat, hog deer and various species of birds and reptiles are also housing here.

Silghat:

It is Situated at a distance of 48 km from Nagaon district. it is a vital and gigantic river port placed on the south bank of River Brahmaputra. Besides this Silghat also has several historic temples to enthrall tourists. This place is completely busy with lots of visitors from everywhere.

Hojai:

This town is located at a distance of 61 km from Nagaon district and is refered as the granary of Assam. It is also one of the important spot for whole-sale marketing for rice in Assam. Besides this other crops like rice, sugarcane, mustard, jute and vegetables are also grown here.

Kaliabor:

This sub-divisional town is situated at a distance of 48 km east of Nagaon. Initially it was the headquarters of Barphukans during the Ahom period. It was also the main witness of several war against the Muslim invaders as a historic place. During the period of the Ahom King Shiva Singha, three ancient temples are still providing their scenic beauty namely Saubhagya Madhav, Dulal Madhav and Gopal Madhav.

Getting Nagaon

This superb place is well linked by by road, rail and river. Northeast Frontier Railway has its Divisional headquarters in Lumding is the main railhead which connects to other important city of Assam. Well water transportation is provided by the rivers like Yamuna River, Kolong and Kopili.
