Manas National Park, Assam


While Kaziranga National park is famous for the Rhinoceros another famous tourist attraction the Manas National park is famous for majestic Tigers. This National park is a World in itself far from human habitation. Tourist often get their best moments while observing the wildlife of this park which includes 55 mammalian species, 36 reptilian species and 3 amphibian species It is a famous Tiger reserve as well.

Manas National ParkManas National Park is not only famous for its Wildlife Sanctuary but also it is the UNESCO Natural World Heritage site, a famous Tiger Reserve, Elephant Reserve and a Biosphere Reserve in Assam. The history of this park says that the Cooch Behar royal family and Raja of Gauripur had used it as a hunting reserve.

Initially This park was established in 1928 as a reserve forest and later in 1973 it got its designation as a Tiger Reserve. The total area covers 2840 sq km. Recently in 25th February 2008 the area was raiseded to 950 km sq. It is located in the Bhutanese Himalayan foothills.

The Manas river is a major part of Brahmaputra River which is the origin of the name of the national park due to the goddess Manasa. This river passes through the heart of the national park. With this many rivers criss-crossing the reserve like Sankosh, Saralbangha, Hel, Tanali, Courang, Sidli, Aio, Manas, Beki, Pathimari, kaladia, Tihunala, Morapagaldia, Nala, Braalia, Pbornodi and Dhansiri. The wildlife of Manas national park consists of differenr types of species of birds and animals including hispid hare, pygmy hog and the red panda those are available at higher altitude.

The main thing is that this national park belongs to both India and Bhutan. The Reserve area mainly devides into 6 districts named Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Kamrup and Darrang.

374 species of major flora are recorded from the park includes Melastoma malbathricum, Oroxylum indicum, Toona ciliata, Trewia nodiflora, Sterculia villosa, Bischofia javanica, Pouzolzia zeylanica, Syzygium formosum, Terminalia bellarica, Zingibar zecumber, Bauhinia sps., Bombax ceiba, Careya arborea, Chukrasia tabularis etc.

Main species of fauna consists of Binturong, Common Mongoose, Small Indian Mongoose, Dhole, Jackal, Indian Fox, Red Fox, Himalayan Black Bear, Sloth Bear, Smooth Indian Otter, Yellow Throated Materna, Chinese Badger, Yellow bellied Weasel, Common Otter, Indian Pangolin, Bearded Sheathtailed Bat, Fulvous Fruit Bat, Short nosed Fruit Bat, Greater Yellow Bat, Malayan giant squirrel, Bay Bamboo Rat, Little Indian Field Mouse, Indian Porcupine, Asiatic Elephant, The Great Indian One Horned Rhinoceros and more.

Awesome Birdlife is very interesting for the tourist. Birds are namely Bengal florican, Lesser fish Eagle, Ospracy, Black Baza, Pied Harrier and many more. Types of tiger, leopard, Clouded leopard, Golden Cat, Leopard-cat, Asian elephant, Asian water Buffalo can also be seen in the park.

The main types of forests are Sub-Himalayan High Alluvial Semi-Evergreen Forests, East Himalayan Moist Mixed Deciduous Forests, Low Alluvial Savana Woodland ,Assam Valley Semi-Evergreen Alluvial Grasslands .

Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Borjhar, Guwahati is the nearest airport for approaching to this national park. Barpeta Road is the nearest railhead for Manas National park. More over this National park provides a grnd pleasant to its tourist.
