About Navagraha Temple


Navagraha Temple is also known as 'Abodes of Surya' or 'the temple of nine celestial bodies'. As the name indicates, Navagraha Temple is dedicated to the nine planets of solar system, i.e. the nine planets namely Sun (Surya) , Merucry (Buddha) , Venus (Shukra) , Jupiter (Brihaspati) , Mars (Mangal) , Saturn (Shani), Moon (Chandra), Rahu and Ketu are worshipped here.

Each of the nine celestial; body is represented by a Shivalingam located within the temple (which totals to nine) and is covered with symbolic colored cloth of each planet. Navagraha Temple is a big center for astrological and astronomical research.

Its an ancient practice of Assamese people to worship Sun (Surya Puja) . Thus a huge number of devotees visit Navagraha Temple to pay their homage to the Gods.

History of Navagraha Temple


Navagraha Temple is built in the late 1800 AD by a ruler Rajeswar Singh, son of Rudra Singh. Major portion of the temple was destroyed by a great earthquake after a few centuries of its construction but it was reconstructed again later on. The 'Garbhagriha' and the water tank 'Silipukhuri' are the piece of original construction which are still existing.

Navagraha Temple is located on the hill 'Chitrachal' in the South East of Guwahati in Assam.

How to reach Navagraha Temple


By land: You can reach Navagraha Temple by hiring a taxi or by bus.
By rail: Guwahati is well linked with the other parts of India through rail. Thus you can reach there by rail also.
By air: Guwahati has its own international airport also. Thus, if your pocket permits, then you can reach Guwahati and Navagraha Temple through airways.
