Guwahati 'The Light of The East' is the Gateway of Assam and to the entire North east region. Situated on the bank of the mighty river Brahmaputra, this former capital of the Kamrup kings (the erstwhile Pragjyotishpur) is a crowded, busy city and a major commercial hub for the region. Guwahati is home of many temples that date back to Vedic and Puranic times. The Kamakhya, Nabagraha, Balaji, Sukreswar, Ugratara and Bashistha Ashram are the holy places in the city. Beautiful view of the Brahmaputra and the Guwahati city from Bhubaneswari, the 'Peacock' island Umananda in the midst of Brahmaputra. Science Museum, State Zoo, Planetarium, Sankardev Kalakshetra etc. are places of worth visiting in Guwahati. Hajo is the meeting point of the Muslims, Buddhists and Hindu faith only 32 lm away from Guwahati, also known for its bell-metal Handicraft works. An hour drive away Sualkuchi is another worth visiting place to explore the dazzling world of Assam silk. The Madan Kamdev archaeological site often called the Khajuraho of the East is only 22 km away from the city.
