Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia is a name that is remembered with respect and immense love by every person who loves Assam. Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia is one Assamese that tried to squeeze out best out of everything that came to his way. Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia was a teacher, novelist, a short story writer, a film maker and the one who stood there whenever Assam and Assamese people wanted him.
Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia was born in Feb 20, 1932 in Nagaon. His colourful life as an young struggler, who amused himself at his own problems, and unique solutions was best depicted by himself in his autobiography, Jivan-Britta. As a successful student he was, Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia obtained Ph.D from prestigious instution like London university, Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia also excelled as a teacher and taught in the Gauhati University.
Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia's short stories are always thought provoking, witty and displays his close view of life. They are translated in almost all Indian languages & the radio adaptation of his stories were immensely popular during eighties which had even helped in getting Akash-vani at its height of popularity.
As a film maker Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia's success can not only be fathomed by the achievement of Rajat kamal for almost all his Assamese movies but also their popularity and the critical acclamation that he commanded. Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia's stories are popular even as theatre pieces and helped theatre groups like Awahan to achieve tremendous success .
Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia has acted as a guiding principle to Assamese people by editing and writing two of the best magazines in their own categories Prantik and Sofura. Prantik is still carrying his legacy though Sofura is not there. But the columns that he guided and wrote are still beaming in peoples’ mind .
Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia had started a foundation for upliftment of children as Arohan which is now run by his family. Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia had achieved several honour for his literary contributions. The govt. Of Assam has honoured him with it’s highest honour Sankardeva Award. Moreover is judged as one of the "Twenty one best Assamese Personalities of 20th century". And he righly is .
