More than 200 buses procured yet to hit the roads,Crores of central fund at stake
|
In order to improve the public transport system in Guwahati city, Assam Government had ordered a fleet of more than 200 luxury buses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM) scheme. However, even after receiving of these buses almost a year back, Assam Government is not able to deploy these buses to hit the roads of Guwahati.
The operation of these buses was allotted to Guwahati Municipality Board, and this has agitated the employees of Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC). ASTC employees have filed a case against the Government's decision to give away these buses to Guwahati municipality. As a result of this controversy, the buses are lying idle for several months and the vehicles have started breaking down. With only one caretaker to look after the whole fleet of buses, valuable parts of most of the buses are already stolen.
The court is yet to decide on which agency would finally run these buses. With heavy inflow of people into the city from various parts of the country, the trauma of public commuters in the city is worsening day by day. Moreover, these new buses have already started breaking down. It appears the fund received by Assam Government as part of a central project is wasted due to the clash between two government departments.
